Lord Mayor of Birmingham Yvonne Mosquito is known as a ‘champion of the underdog’ who strives to help people prosper no matter what their background.
She has served on the city council for more than 20 years, working on issues from child sexual exploitation to female genital mutilation, forced marriage, places of safety, knife crime, elder physical and financial abuse, and domestic violence. As Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner she was responsible for key areas including counter-terrorism.
Social justice and equality
She has been a Saturday school volunteer helper and teacher; worked with an organisation helping youngsters out of deprivation to go on to further education; and is determined to make sure people can realise their full potential.
Cllr Mosquito is an ordained minister and has worked with a dozen faith groups around social justice and equality. Her appointment as Lord Mayor was welcomed with enthusiasm by all sides of the council chamber.
